East Peoria is set to improve access and safety in its downtown area with the addition of nine on-street parking spaces and a new signalized pedestrian crosswalk. These enhancements are strategically located along West Washington Street, near the upcoming retail opening of the BluTowne mixed-use development and adjacent to the Levee District.

Key Takeaways

  • Nine new on-street parking spaces will be added along West Washington Street.
  • A signalized pedestrian crosswalk will be installed between the BluTowne complex and the Levee District.
  • The project aims to address parking needs and enhance safety for the growing commercial area.
  • The city council approved a bid of nearly $156,000 for the project.

Addressing Parking and Pedestrian Needs

As the retail component of East Peoria’s BluTowne development prepares to open, city officials have identified a need for increased parking and improved pedestrian safety. The city council has approved a project that will introduce nine new on-street parking spaces along West Washington Street. This initiative is designed to support the commercial area and the broader downtown district.

In addition to the parking, a crucial pedestrian crossing will be established between the BluTowne complex and the Levee District, near the Panera Bread location. This signalized crosswalk is intended to provide a safe and convenient way for pedestrians to navigate between these key areas.

Commissioner Mark Hill stated that the evaluation following the completion of BluTowne’s construction revealed the value of adding these parking spots for the commercial area and the rest of downtown. The project involves removing the existing curb on the north side of Washington Street in the designated area to accommodate the new parking spaces and installing the signalized crosswalk, which will be similar to the existing one between City Hall and the shopping center.

Enhanced Safety Measures

Mayor John Kahl highlighted the importance of the signalized crossing, noting that it adds an essential layer of safety for pedestrians. This measure is expected to significantly improve the experience for those walking in the vicinity of the new development and the established Levee District.

Other City Council Approvals

In addition to the BluTowne-related improvements, the East Peoria City Council also addressed several other matters:

  • Water Main Replacements: Three separate contracts totaling almost $84,000 were unanimously approved for engineering services related to water main replacement projects on Bloomington Road, Venture Drive, and Kennedy Drive.
  • New Service Truck: Approval was granted, pending approximately $50,000, for the purchase of a new service truck for the water department.
  • Liquor Licenses: The cap on package-sale liquor licenses was reduced by three, setting the new limit at 22.
  • Street Vacation: A request to vacate a portion of Hemlock Avenue, east of Hawthorne Avenue and near the Twin Oaks Missionary Baptist Church, was approved.

The city’s proactive approach to infrastructure and accessibility improvements demonstrates a commitment to supporting its growing commercial areas and ensuring the safety and convenience of its residents and visitors.
