Illinois Central College Today JENNIFER HAINES provided an excellent tour of the college’s Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) program housed in Birch Hall. The doors are wave touchless to open most of the doors. Accessible entry and accessible venue with commercial carpeted safe footing in wide accessible hallways. Birch Hall offers a kitchen to provide hands-on experiences in activities of daily living. The OTA department has several classrooms and lab rooms to simulate and learn interventions. The campus buildings, all named after trees, have wide accessible sidewalks between them. The Student Center houses a small cafeteria with a few items and bottles chilled beverages. The Bookstore is a smaller version of the main campus with accessible entry and wide aisles. The Banwart Library has wide accessible entry with marked tiles and good signage. Shelves are from the ground to up high. Several announcement boards display theatre, artists series, and presentations, volunteer options like The Clothesline Project to raise awarenss about sex trafficking and honor survivors. The campus offers lots of hand sanitizer dispensers in working order, water fountains and water bottle refill stations, and vending machines for beverages and single serve snacks. The building offers two private group study rooms, two open study desk, and cozy open ares with comfy chairs for studying and socializing The OTA program has a course for students to explore the campus in wheelchairs to determine the accessibility of the campus, highlighting accessible features and providing concrete recommendations for improvements. These recommendations have been implemented. This is a beautiful campus, an organized OTA program, with excellent faculty.

We had a conference scheduled here. It was very spread out, and there was a lot of walking from one place to the next. The rooms were good for our presentations.

The first thing I noticed was the cool, slightly institutional smell in the hallway and the soft squeak of shoes on the carpet. I came by to get a feel for the campus and ask a few program questions, and the person I spoke with in Birch Hall took a few minutes to show me how the labs and practice spaces are set up. The touchless doors, wide sidewalks, and clear signs made it pretty easy to get around, which I appreciated more than I expected. The library and study areas looked useful, with spots for quiet work as well as small group rooms. I also noticed plenty of water refill stations, sanitizer dispensers, and vending machines, so the basics are covered. Staff I dealt with in person were polite and practical, though I can see how communication might depend a lot on the department or instructor. The trade and health program areas seem to be where the school puts a lot of its energy — more hands-on than flashy. The cafeteria is convenient if you just need a drink or quick bite, but I would not plan on eating there every day on a student budget ☕. Overall, it feels like a solid, affordable place to start or pick up career skills, as long as you ask questions and do some homework on professors before signing up. I left with a clearer picture of what they offer, and with a few reservations but generally a decent impression.

This is an amazing community college; I learned a lot of useful skills and knowledge while attending. I went for the Automotive Technology program and would not recommend it more. It is by far one of the best programs at the campus. The instructors are very outgoing and understanding. Tom and Todd run one of the best college automotive programs in central Illinois. Without them I would not be the technician I am today. I would highly suggest going through this program if you attend or plan on going to Illinois Central College.

A STRONG word of warning to any, all, and potential donors and future students to this institution. I encourage you to reach out to current students (especially students in the dental program) about their experiences and their treatment by professors and secretaries. There is a lackluster approach to professionalism and the general want for students to succeed. My opinion of this institute would be different if these were isolated incidences but these are multiple horror stories by current students. Donors and future students be warned!
