A significant financial boost is set to transform Deer Creek’s economic landscape as Heartland Food Solutions LLC has been awarded a $1 million grant to establish a popcorn production facility. This expansion is anticipated to create 40 new jobs in the small community, located between Peoria and Bloomington-Normal.

Key Takeaways

  • A $1 million Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) will fund Heartland Food Solutions’ expansion into popcorn production in Deer Creek.
  • The project is expected to create 40 new jobs and retain existing ones.
  • The grant aims to capitalize on the growing demand for ready-to-eat, healthier snack options.

Economic Revitalization Through Popcorn

The federal grant, administered by the state through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, will enable Heartland Food Solutions to acquire an existing company and invest in new equipment for popcorn manufacturing. This initiative is particularly vital for Deer Creek, a town of approximately 660 residents, as it aims to retain and create much-needed employment opportunities.

Tapping into a Growing Market

Derek Karr, Chief Financial Officer at Heartland Food Solutions, highlighted the strategic importance of this expansion. "The ready-to-eat popcorn market is growing rapidly as consumers shift toward healthier, better-for-you snacks, and we’re seeing strong demand across both existing and new customers," Karr stated. He added that the grant funding is crucial for investing in equipment, fostering job creation, and enhancing the company’s capabilities to meet market demands and support continued growth in Deer Creek and surrounding areas.

Community and State Support

The Village of Deer Creek will act as the facilitator for the grant. Village President Grant Hackney expressed gratitude for the support, emphasizing its role in making small towns like Deer Creek attractive to businesses. Governor JB Pritzker also lauded the investment, stating, "Investments like these don’t just sustain local economies and create new jobs for Illinoisans — they transform communities, promote continued growth, and raise the quality of life for working families in our state."

Heartland Food Solutions, an Illinois-based company, already operates sister companies involved in food production and processing throughout Central Illinois, employing over 150 individuals. This new venture into popcorn production is expected to further strengthen its presence and contribute significantly to the regional economy.
