Four Peoria tattoo artists have launched Brass Eagle Tattoo, a new downtown shop that builds upon the legacy of their late mentor, Tim Beck. The venture marks a fresh start for Zach Dole, Sam Lott, Terry Lessard, and Ezra Coates, who previously worked at Freedom Ink. The new parlor aims to blend artistic freedom with a comfortable, welcoming atmosphere, continuing a tradition of mentorship and camaraderie.

Honoring A Mentor’s Legacy

  • Brass Eagle Tattoo is founded by artists who trained under the renowned Peoria tattoo artist Tim Beck.
  • Beck was known for his distinctive 3-D style, international acclaim, and mentorship.
  • The new shop seeks to carry forward Beck’s artistic principles and his dedication to the craft.

The four artists behind Brass Eagle Tattoo—Zach Dole, Sam Lott, Terry Lessard, and Ezra Coates—departed from Freedom Ink to establish their own establishment. This move comes a couple of years after the passing of Tim Beck, the owner of Freedom Ink and a significant mentor to many in the local tattoo community. Dole, now the owner and a tattooer at Brass Eagle, expressed that the decision was about "spreading our roots" and starting a new chapter in Peoria.

A Thriving New Beginning

Despite being open for only about a month, Brass Eagle Tattoo has seen significant success, exceeding the artists’ expectations. The shop has experienced a strong influx of both existing clients and new customers, with approximately 75% of business coming from familiar faces and 25% from newcomers. The artists are grateful for the community’s support.

The Influence of Tim Beck

Tim Beck was a highly respected figure in the tattooing world, not just locally but globally. His work, often characterized by a striking "3-D look" and infused with American Traditional elements, garnered international attention. Beck’s talent extended to magazine features, national conventions, numerous awards, and even designing for the band Fallout Boy. Dole highlighted Beck’s ability to simplify designs with clean lines and bold colors, a technical skill that requires immense precision.

Friends and fellow artists recall Beck’s exceptional skill, his collaborative spirit, and his generosity as a mentor. Beyond his artistic prowess, Beck was also remembered as a good human being, a family man, and a Christian, qualities that deeply influenced his mentees. This emphasis on personal connection and camaraderie is something the Brass Eagle team strives to maintain.

A Family Atmosphere and Artistic Freedom

The team at Brass Eagle fosters a close-knit, family-like environment, mirroring the supportive atmosphere Beck cultivated. They often engage in activities outside of work, such as bowling or game nights, strengthening their bonds. This sense of unity extends into the shop, where they collaborate on designs and unwind together.

The name "Brass Eagle" was chosen by Dole, who had collected brass eagle house plaques for years. He discovered their symbolism of strength, freedom, wisdom, power, and leadership, finding a profound connection to these meanings for his new venture. The shop itself is designed to be open, bright, and comfortable, providing ample space for artists and creating a relaxing environment for clients, complete with plants and natural lighting.

Evolving Artistry and Future Growth

While all the artists at Brass Eagle studied American Traditional tattooing under Beck or through other apprenticeships, each brings a unique style to their work. They emphasize the importance of being well-rounded and capable of handling diverse client requests. The shop also has two apprentices, Lilly Carmack and Andrew Terrell, who are being trained to uphold the high standards of the craft and adapt to the constantly evolving techniques and equipment in the tattooing industry.

A New Era for Peoria Tattooing

Brass Eagle Tattoo is positioned to become a significant presence in Peoria’s tattoo scene. The shop is open Tuesday through Saturday, and appointments can be made by visiting the shop, calling, or emailing. The artists are committed to continuing their growth and serving as a "powerhouse in tattooing here in Peoria."
